My Anime and JRPG Composing Course!

Bio

Gavin Leeper first got following online from a video of he made teaching about chord progressions commonly found in anime music, Japanese VGM, and J-Pop. Since then, he's continued to delve into contemporary Japanese music, and the the theory behind its sound.

He has taught about the more esoteric aspects of the circle of fifths and how it relates to modern Japanese music. In fact, he created a circle of fifths diagram with a yin yang overlaid on it to illustrate a concept popularized by Jacob Collier about the light side and dark side of the circle of fifths, and the feelings evoked by going in a perfect direction (adding flats) versus a plagal direction (adding sharps).

He has also recently started sharing his orchestration studies. One recent video on his channel, for example, shared an orchestral transcription of Yu Peng Cheng's Inazuma, and interviews with composers and traditional instrumentalists analyzing the timbral choices made in that work.

Through and through, he has mostly distinguished himself as a harmony expert applying jazz theory harmony ideas to conemporary Japanese genres.
